Mired in shades of grey, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s smart, difficult film is as true to the story’s internal workings as to its historical snapshot of East Germany in 1984. Ulrich Mühe plays a Stasi agent assigned to spy on two potential revolutionaries with a profundity that’s tough to shake, quietly peeling back layer upon layer of impossible-to-answer questions about the nature of loyalty, art and our tangled capacity for compassion and transgression.
The film is a beautifully written and well-staged recreation of the nightmare years of the GDR as von Donnersmarck focuses on the venality of the regime that wrapped itself in the rhetoric of a workers’ paradise while building a living hell and waging a cold war on its citizens.
